How the Asphalt Calculator Works

When you enter your measurements, thickness, and asphalt type, the calculator uses a few standard formulas to estimate area, volume, total asphalt weight, and cost. Below you can see the exact calculation flow with a realistic driveway example.

Step 1: Calculate Surface Area

Let us suppose you are resurfacing a straight rectangular driveway. You measure the driveway and find the length is 28 feet and the width is 10 feet.

To get the surface area, the calculator multiplies length by width.

Surface Area = Length × Width

Example

Surface Area = 28 ft × 10 ft = 280 ft²

If you switch the results to square meters, the calculator converts square feet into square meters using a fixed conversion factor.

Step 2: Convert Compacted Asphalt Thickness

Now let us suppose you want a 2.5 inch compacted asphalt layer. Thickness matters because it controls how much asphalt you need.

For volume calculations, the calculator converts inches into feet so the units match the area unit in square feet.

Thickness (ft) = Thickness (in) ÷ 12

Example

Thickness (ft) = 2.5 ÷ 12 = 0.2083 ft

That means the asphalt layer is 0.2083 feet thick after compaction.

Step 3: Calculate Asphalt Volume

Now the calculator uses the area and the thickness to calculate asphalt volume. It takes your surface area in square feet and multiplies it by thickness in feet, which gives volume in cubic feet.

Example

Volume (ft³) = 280 × 0.2083 = 58.32 ft³

Most people also want volume in cubic yards because asphalt estimates often use that unit. So the calculator converts cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27.
